Custom fields for subscribers
Every contact starts with a set of built-in fields, including:
- Email address
- Tags
- Created date and last activity date
- Source (which form, import, or integration they came from)
- Open rate and click rate
- Status (active, unsubscribed, bounced, etc.)
- First name, last name, and address fields (address, city, state, postal code)
You can also add an unlimited number of your own custom fields (or create new ones while importing a list) for anything else you want to track — job title, company name, plan tier, signup source, you name it. Think of these as a lightweight CRM attached to every subscriber: whatever you store here, you can personalize emails with and build audiences from.
Adding custom fields
Head to the People tab, and click on "Fields." From this dropdown you can create new fields, or choose to show/hide existing ones for a cleaner view.
When you create a new field, you choose its type:
- Text: The field type you'll use in most cases. It stores any plain text or numbers — names, company, job title, plan, and so on.
- Yes/No: A true-or-false field. It usually corresponds to a checkbox on your signup forms (eg. "I'd like to hear about promotional offers").
- Date: For dates like a birthday, anniversary, or renewal date. Date fields are especially handy for automations — you can trigger an email on a subscriber's birthday, for example.
A note on data names: When you create a field, Audienceful generates a lowercase "data name" for it (spaces become underscores, so "Job Title" becomes job_title). That data name is what your signup forms and imports map to. If you rename a field later, its data name changes too — so update any forms that reference it.
